Pack This, Not That

When you’re traveling by plane, particularly if you’d prefer not to check a bag, pack samples of cosmetics and prescription creams (ask your doctor for these) instead of toting the full-size versions. Sample sizes are generally small enough to accommodate carry-on restrictions, and you’ll likely have enough for the duration of your trip. Plus, you’ll avoid the possibility of losing your main bottle of shampoo or face cream.

Don’t have any sample-size cosmetics? Go to or for a variety of freebie offers. Or take advantage of Sephora’s and Kiehl’s policies of giving three free samples with any online order.

At the end of your trip, be sure to stash any hotel freebies—like shampoo, conditioner, or body lotion—in your suitcase for the next trip.

I always ask for samples of perfumes and lotions at the beauty counter when I buy full size versions of my favorites. I tell the salesperson I will be traveling soon and sometimes they will give me extra.
