Surviving a Day in Heels

heal-tiptoe_300It’s New York Fashion Week, and that means the Real Simple Fashion team is hard at work… and spending very long days in very high heels. How do we make it through? Here are our favorite tips for staying comfortably elevated.

• If the shoe fits, it’s going to cause you less pain. Heels should fit as snugly as possible without feeling tight—this will keep your arch supported and prevent slipping, which causes blisters.

• It’s not about the height of the heel, it’s about the angle of your foot. Look for a platform. The heel height might be four inches, but with a one-inch platform it will only feel like three (it may not sound like much, but it’s a big difference!).

• Add some padding. Pick up some insoles or pads for the balls of your feet. Inexpensive and available at almost any drug store, they go a long way in cushioning each step you take.
