If your table linens are dotted with red wine stains thanks to a little extra merriment at the holiday party you hosted, follow this stain-fighting trick to ensure the mess gets properly cleaned up.

First dab the offending spots with white wine (yes, you read that right!) and let it sit for one minute. Then, immerse in cool water for 30 minutes. Spritz with a stain remover, like Tide Boost Pre-Treat Spray, and wash in the warmest water safe for the fabric. For best results, use non-chlorine bleach if the fabric allows.

The table linen used in our New Year’s evening’s meal saw two spills, one of which was a freshly poured glass of red wine. For me, however, the amount of white wine needed to remove the red wine was not in our presence!

So, following my mother’s advice, I poured boiling water over the linen as I draped it across my sink. Then I repeated the process two more times. The stain truly disappeared right before me. Though the tablecloth was dry clean only, I feared letting it remain in this condition (besides, it was already wet) and took a chance on then laundering in my own washer. I did however, allow the cleaners to do the ironing of the 60 x 148 linen!

    Now, for the next party…
