Various organizations allow people to sponsor animals year round—it’s similar to a traditional donation to an organization, only your friend will also receive information about the furry (or feathery!) friend whose gift was in their support.
A few charities to consider, though there are many more options depending on your friend’s favorite animal and beliefs:
• Best Friends Animal Society
Choose from cats, dogs, bunnies, barnyard animals, birds, and pigs—all who have names and photos. Sponsorship gifts come with an e-card all about the animals.
• Chimp Haven
Your giftee becomes a chimpanzee’s Best Friend, and gets sent materials about the sponsored chimp and his or her life at Chimp Haven sanctuary.
• World Wildlife Fund
Select your sponsored animal by species—many of which are endangered. A $50 donation comes with a plush doll of the animal, adoption certificate and species card, a photo, and a gift bag.
• Farm Sanctuary
Your donation provides food and shelter for a needy farm animal, and your gift recipient will receive an adoption package, along with a calendar, and other goodies.
• Heifer International
In this case, you actually give an animal to a family in need, who are then trained in proper care of the animal, and in turn are more self-sustainable thanks to its wool, milk, or eggs.
• Love Animals
Essentially Kickstarter for animals, you purchase a gift card that your friend can then spend on a specific animal or project of her choice.
