How Much Wine Should You Serve?

Wine bottle and glasses

When hosting a party, figuring out how many bottles of wine to serve can be as daunting as choosing what food to prepare. Inevitably, you’ll have to do a bit of guesswork, but winemaker Rebecca Nelson of Estancia Wines recommends having enough wine to serve 1.5 glasses per person, per hour.

Since there are five 5-ounce servings in a standard bottle of vino, you’ll need about one bottle for every three guests per hour (we’ve rounded up a bit to make sure you don’t run out!).

To ensure you have something that suits everyone’s taste, Nelson suggests serving one full-bodied white and one versatile red that won’t compete with each other—like the Estancia Monterey County Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Pretty much one bottle per person is a good rule of thumb for a 3-4 hr dinner party, etc.

Agree a bottle per person is a good choice. Also serve sparkling and flat water in pitchers to provide a break in consumption if the dinner is not sit down.
