Is Your Nail Polish Expired?

winternail-carecover_300Notice your nail color isn’t as shiny and bright as it used to be? There’s a good chance that your polish is expired, which can happen over time.

If a simple shake of your nail polish doesn’t solve discoloration and color separation, it’s probably time to toss the bottle. Says John McCook, a cosmetics chemist and the CEO of Discovery Partners, a product-development firm in Frisco, Texas, “The original hue, drying time, shine, and length of wear degrade over the life span of a polish.” McCook recommends parting with polishes every six months.

Throwing away nail polish is toxic to the environment. You should donate them to women’s shelters. It then becomes a cheap, easy way for a woman to feel good about herself.

This is one of the most illegitimate posts I’ve seen in a long time. Get an unknown chemist and an unknown company to claim that nail polish must be replaced every 6 months- really? This must be a ploy to get sales to the cosmetics industry. Better luck next time, Real Simple.

I have noticed that mine is not the same a year later when I break out the Holiday colors- the polish it thicker and clumpier and doesn’t last as long :( :(

Old nail polish thickens and becomes clumpy eventually, because it has been exposed to air that’s why it loose its effectiveness over time. When my nail polish gets thick, I just put it with nail polish thinner and then shake a bit – *snap* it becomes thin again. However, nail polish doesn’t really expires.
