A Bar Staple That Helps Fight Bloating

cart-bar_300The holiday season typically means travelling, dry weather, and lots of eating and drinking—all which lead to bloating and indigestion. Fortunately, you can try a quick fix that you may already have on hand in, of all places, your liquor cabinet: Angostura Bitters ($12, amazon.com).

Jasmina Aganovic, an MIT-trained chemist and the CEO of Bona Clara, an all natural skincare and wellness company based in Boston, swears by drinking a teaspoon of the herbal bitters when she’s on-the-go. (Take note, however, that the bitters do contain almost 45 percent alcohol by volume.) You can either dilute the bitters in a glass of water, or drink it straight—whichever is easier for you. Bitters help to stimulate your tongue’s bitter receptors, which trigger the production of digestion enzymes.

    Bitters, ginger ale and lime will knock out an upset stomach every time, though you may need to drink more than one glass.
