Whether you’re painting an entire room or a piece of furniture that needs freshening up, a new color can make a dramatic difference. If you’re headed out to buy a new can of paint, keep this tip in mind to save some cash.

Ask the sales associate at your local paint shop or home store where they keep cans of paint that customers didn’t end up taking, or ones that were returned due to incorrect color choices. If you are willing to be a bit flexible with your own color choice, it’s a great way to stretch your dollar. Often, you can score an entire gallon of paint for a quarter of the original price.

See easy ways to incorporate color into your decor.

We did this! I scored a beautiful pale green paint (for just $5 at Home Depot) that I used for our laundry room. (:

Is there a best time of the year to buy? As a new homeowner, I am a bit daunted by the amount of projects I would like to do – and would love to save some money by scheduling them around the best times to buy supplies or service.

I’ve found paint everytime I need some. It doesn’t make any difference what time of year. I painted a bathroom a nice green and the best deal was a gallon of a warm cocoa that I did my bedroom in. I then went back and found enough cream for my woodwork. I don’t have a big box store close by so I get mine at Walmart…as much as I hate the store, they do have Vaspar.
