2 Rules for Organizing Your Living Room Furniture
If you’re thinking about rearranging your furniture in the near future, or you’re moving in to a new space, keep these two rules in mind when deciding where to place everything.
1. Create two entries: Each seating area (if your space is big enough to have more than one) should be accessible via two different pathways. This way when you have guests over and you move from the living room to dining room or living room to kitchen table you won’t have a bottleneck of people trying to change locations.
2. 18-inches is the magic number: That’s how much space should be between each piece of furniture (think sofa and coffee table or sofa and accent chair) so guests can comfortably pass between the two pieces.

I’m very uncomfortable when all the chairs and sofas are lined up along the walls. It IS permissible to float pieces in a room, which makes for easier conversation and doesn’t look like a doctor’s office waiting room.
WHERE is the mirror from!? Stunning
We have a teeny living room and a big family. What is a good layout for a family that needs a sofa, love seat and a chair with an ottoman in a small room with only one large entry? HELP!
I second April’s comment…our family room is a long rectangle with one large entry. How do we arrange the furniture so everyone has a seat (to see the tv, or to talk) and can move around? No “furniture lineups” allowed!
Very good post… I would definitely tell this at home…
2 nice little tips for arranging the furniture, just a shame our living room currently has to much in it to space it out nicely.
