Wednesday Trivia: Your Ex and Facebook
With Valentine’s Day around the corner, everyone is thinking about love—especially those who have been jilted by an ex. It’s easy to get lost on a bad trip down memory lane: According to a survey from the University of Western Ontario in Canada, a whopping nine of out ten Facebook users employ the social networking site to check up on their ex-boyfriends and ex-girlfriends (and by “check up on,” I mean agonize over their status updates, study their photos, and reread old messages, again and again and again.) But if you can, resist the urge! Why? A recent study published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking shows that those who frequently look at their former partner’s Facebook page or his list of Facebook friends tend to experience greater distress and more longing post-breakup than those who refrain from the practice. In other words, blocking your ex isn’t just common sense: It’s science! And it could save you from a very unhappy Valentine’s Day.
