Vintage Little Black Dress

Vintage and thrift shopping is all about the thrill of the hunt, but it’s rare that an absolutely perfect, wearable-off-the-rack piece turns up. Sleeves and hemlines—two of the elements most affected by fashion’s changing silhouettes—are especially to blame.

Here are a few ways to make them modern in minutes:

1. Snip off dated sleeves at the shoulder seam (without cutting through the seam itself).
2. Shorten skirts that hit you at an awkward length.

With both of these you can finish the alterations with hem tape (if you’re not handy with a needle and thread). Hem tape is an iron-on bonding that creates a permanent, and more importantly, washable hem in seconds.
