Before you write a check to a charity this fall, there’s one thing you should verify. Make sure that your organization of choice has 501(c)(3) tax status from the IRS. Having this status means that they donations are used for charitable purposes; your gifts are tax-deductible; that they make their financial information public; and that there are rules governing how much they can spend to lobby the government.

The easiest way to check for 501(c)(3) status is to visit and search their database.
