In the wake of natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy that ravaged the East coast this week, there are a few people who try to take advantage of people’s natural inclination to give. So how do you avoid being a victim of a charity scam?

Start by being wary of charities that you’ve never heard of, especially if they are soliciting donations through e-mail or social networking sites. Instead, verify that the charity you’re supporting is recognized by GuideStar, Better Business Bureau, or Charity Navigator.
