Readers Test Our Universally Flattering Shades

In our October issue, we did a feature on the most flattering makeup shades. After extensive staff testing to find colors that work on a range of skin tones, we singled out 15 winning products in 6 categories. We then asked for reader-volunteers to give the colors a go.

Patricia Richardson

Our first reader, Patricia, loved the Bobbi Brown lipstick in Blue Raspberry (which she is wearing here) the best. “It is sure to become my everyday staple, and I plan to buy it when I run out.” She loved both its texture and how great it looked with her darker complexion. Patricia is also wearing the Stila lip liner in Aspiring.

Tara Thies
Tara, shown here wearing colors from the Clarins eye shadow quartet in Rosewood, really liked how well the entire compact blended together. “It made it easy to have some definition in my eyes, while still only taking a few minutes to get ready in the morning.” Another winner: She thought the neutral-toned Laura Mercier Lip Pencil in Naked was, on its own, perfect for every day.

Angela went bold with vibrant NARS lipstick in Schiap. With its matte finish, she says, “this is a long-lasting color for a night out.” Angela also found multiple uses for Stila’s eye shadow in Kitten, brushing it on her eyes and using it as highlighter.

Sharon loved Elizabeth Arden’s cream blush in Nectar because “it added a nice color without being too overwhelming or bright.” Here, she’s also wearing L’Oreal Paris Extra-Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner in Black, which she reports went on smoothly and evenly.

Suzanne’s favorite product was the Lancome eyeliner in Noir: “I’ve never had so much luck using a liquid liner. The thin tip is very forgiving and I love the way it, in fact, pairs with the L’Oreal liner on the lower lid.” As an avid lipstick wearer, she gave high marks to the saturated color of Maybelline New York’s Color Sensational Lipcolor in Red Revival but felt it took a few layers to fully cover.

The standout product for Barbara was the Shiseido blush in Petal, which was something new for her. “I always shy away from pink blushes since I have a natural pink to my complexion. I’m always afraid of looking like I have rosacea.” She also liked that it had such a soft, sheer texture.
