Gone Girl: Boy Gets Girl Back (or Vice Versa) (Major Spoiler Alert!)

Bookies, what an ending. You know it’s a good book when you are still thinking about it days later. What did you think? Did you like the ending? Dislike? Still thinking?

I have to admit that I wanted justice for Nick. On the other hand, I admire Flynn for keeping us on our toes until the very last page. If Amy was exposed, then it would have made for a more predictable plot.

When Part 3 kicked off, Nick was out on bond awaiting trial. Flynn describes Nick in his home, finishing up his message to Amy that would later become a post on a news blog. He senses something is wrong when he hears the camera crews outside of his home “emit a loud, collective, oceanic wushing.” He says, “Somebody was here….I opened the door. It was my wife. Back.”

When I first read this, I could hardly believe that Amy had come back, especially so quickly and trouble-free. I thought there would be more to her return. I guess I never pictured her showing up on their doorstep.

Amy plays the police (much like everyone else in her life) and explains that Desi abducted and raped her—and she killed him in self-defense. Of course, the police end up buying her story (whether they wanted to or not) because it’s iron-clad. Do you think that there are any loopholes in Amy’s story? I was hoping for a slip-up in her explanation to the police. I really wanted them to catch her in a lie.

Over the next few chapters we go back and forth between Amy and Nick and who has the final word on their relationship. Ultimately, Amy wins by getting pregnant, forcing Nick to spend the rest of his life protecting his son. He says, “Amy had me forever, or as long as she wanted, because I needed to save my son, to try to unhook, unlatch, debarb, undo everything that Amy did.” Did you see that coming? Amy is crazier than I ever imagined.

And Nick falls into all of her traps. I think that his personality is weak and maybe Go is right when she says, “You two, you’re f****** addicted to each other.”

The book ends with Amy saying, “I don’t have anything else to add. I just wanted to make sure I had the last word. I think I’ve earned that.” Thoughts?

After finishing the book, I created a sequel in my head and, in the next chapter, Nick gets revenge. I hope Flynn continues these characters. They are so intriguing in a twisted sort of way!

So what did you think? Did you like the way it ended? Were you surprised by her pregnancy? Did you want Amy to be brought to justice?

One last thing before we wrap up the July book club. I’m happy to tell you that Gillian Fynn has agreed to answer questions, right here on our blog. Just post them below by EOD on Friday, July 27. I am very excited to pick her brain!

Hope you enjoyed the book as much as I did. Thank you for following me on my first book club adventure. Happy reading!
