Move over acai, goji berry and mangosteen, there’s a new exotic superfruit in town!
Pitaya is the hot pink fruit that springs from a few species of cacti—and it’s also known as dragonfruit—that’s high in vitamin C and other antioxidants. They also have lots of fiber and minerals like phosphorus and calcium. What’s more, the seeds are rich in heart-healthy polyunsaturated fats! The flavor is mild (like melon), the flesh is low in calories, and it blends well with other fruits as well as coconut juices.
I heard about it recently because if you’re looking for organic pitaya these days, one major source has actually been locked up by the company Juice Generation—a relatively small chain of juice bars in New York City. The CEO of Juice Generation (who also co-owns the Cooler Cleanse brand with Salma Hayek) liked the fruit so much, he bought the entire crop from 18 organic farms in Nicaragua this year. (Interestingly, these farms only employ single mothers.)
So if you’re lucky enough to find any of these spiky but sweet beauties in the store, a farmer’s market or in a beverage—give them a try.
