Ellen Seidman is a woman I worked with years ago when we were both editors at Glamour. While we were working together (well, not actually during work hours, but during the years we were colleagues) Ellen gave birth to a son, Max, who had a stroke when he was born. Max has cerebral palsy, is both a challenge and a great joy to his parents and younger sister, and is now a bit famous through Ellen’s blog.
“Love That Max” is Ellen’s devoted—and honest, and funny, and touching—account of life with her adorable son, who is now 9. A few days ago Ellen asked me to help publicize Spread the Word to End the Word day, an effort created by the Special Olympics to raise awareness about the use of the word “retard.” Ellen has posted this beautiful video on her blog, and I asked if I could put it on my blog too.
Today is Spread the Word day. Please watch this video. If you are someone who can be made to cry at nursery school graduations and pet food commercials, as I am, then get out the tissues. If not—well, at the very least it will make you think.
