Late-night snacking is one of my biggest diet devils. For some reason, about an hour after dinner, I get a little thought in my head: Hmm, something sweet would be good right now. Sometimes, I stave it off by eating a little of this, a little of that… Other times, I go for the sweets full force and end up overindulging. Either way, I’m not necessarily hungry and I overshoot my calories for the day in a big way.
I know myself enough to know that just saying “kitchen’s closed!” isn’t going to work for me. So instead, I need a different strategy. That’s where sweet tea comes in. No, I’m not talking about sweet tea sweet tea—I mean hot herbal tea that has a bit of sweetness to it to trick myself into feeling sweetly satisfied without packing in unneeded calories. Heather introduced me to a brand called Mighty Leaf’s Chocolate Mint Truffle tea. While it’s not quite the same as, say, Baskin Robbins Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream, it’s pretty tasty, especially when you add a little milk. I also love the spicy sweetness of decaf Constant Comment tea. Curling up on the couch with a hot mug of tea is both soothing and satisfying, I’m finding. And bonus, my husband is very pleased that I’m not dipping into his treats every night.
