Hair Tutorial: The Messy Top Knot

January 27, 2012 | By | Comments (10)

Last week I was lucky enough to attend the Altitude Design Summit in Salt Lake City. I spent 3 1/2 days hanging out with some of the most talented design bloggers out there (and I hope to be introducing you to many of them and their work soon here on Simply Stated.)

And while I don’t normally contribute to the Style Guide on Simply Stated, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share one of the most popular hairstyles at the conference—these are some very fashionable ladies. In addition to red lips and dark framed glasses, 2012 is apparently the year of the messy top knot or messy ballerina bun, whatever you prefer to call it. Here are a few examples:

Two top knots are better than one

Polished high bun

Top knot with bangs

Perfectly messy top knot

Given that I have such fine hair, I needed a tutorial to learn how to get this voluminous bun, and Anna, a.k.a. Tulip Louise (pictured above in the fabulous leopard print coat) was nice enough to put together a video to show us all how to create her version. Take a look below, and be sure to stay tuned for the outtakes!
