The holidays are over and the temperatures are finally starting to drop here in New York. Tonight the low is going to be in the teens, and while I’m no stranger to cold weather, it doesn’t mean I don’t struggle every time winter really rolls around. Especially since my bedroom in my apartment doesn’t actually have a heater. So, instead I’m in the market for a space heater.

But before I buy one, I wanted to do a little research on how to safely use a space heater in my apartment. Here are a few tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • Keep your heater 3-feet from the wall and 3-feet from anything flammable
  • Institute a kid-free zone around the space heater
  • Plug it into the outlet directly, not into a surge protector
  • Turn off the space heater before leaving the room or going to sleep

Do you have a space heater in your home? Real Simple did a road test on the best space heaters, but I’d love to hear your recommendations too.
