Last weekend my extended family took a mini vacation to celebrate my grandmother’s 75th birthday. All 20-something of us were asked to stand up and give my grandmother a toast at some point throughout dinner.

I don’t have much practice giving toasts so my wheels were really turning. Though I managed to put together a few sentimental thoughts, a little preparation likely would have saved a few frantic minutes during the appetizer course.

Throughout the night, I noticed that the best toasts given were those that were anecdotal, focused, and short and sweet.

I don’t think I have to worry too much about being asked to give another toast at any upcoming gatherings, but I’ll certainly be on the look out for a few clever holiday toasts…just in case!
