I’m Amy Maclin, a deputy editor here at Real Simple, and I’ll be leading the book club next month. (I’ve never been in a book club, real or virtual, so I’m pretty tickled about it.)
The winner of December’s poll is … A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, which overtook the other three coming-of-age novels in our contest by a pretty decent margin. I haven’t had the pleasure of reading it since I was about 11, which is how old the heroine, Francie, is at the beginning of the book. I remember thinking that Williamsburg, Brooklyn—where Francie and her family live—sounded like the most exotic place on earth (Going to the butcher for your mother! What could be more thrilling?) and that I wanted some black stockings and high-button boots like the gal on the cover of my copy. Something tells me it’s going to be an even richer experience this time around, when I am, ahem, no longer 11.
The book has about 500 pages, but I think it will be a fairly quick read, especially for those who get a jump on it this weekend whilst languishing in a post-turkey haze.
Here’s our reading schedule:
For December 2: Book 1
For December 9: Book 2
For December 16: Book 3
For December 23: Books 4 and 5
Happy reading! And happy Thanksgiving. See you back here on the 2nd! I’ll be the one in the high-button boots.
