Hi Simply Stated Readers, I’m Lindsay Hunt, the food assistant at Real Simple. Being the food assistant means doing everything from organizing our Road Tests and food Daily Finds to going into the test kitchen and tasting lots of products.
Food has always been my passion. In the few years since I graduated from college and culinary school, I’ve tried a lot of food-related jobs: bartending, selling cheese, making sandwiches, recipe testing for a cookbook, and blogging for a celebrity chef.
Now that I’m at Real Simple, I’m learning even more from the talented women in the food department. I’ve already absorbed many useful tips from our staff food editors (and fellow bloggers) Dawn and Charlyne.
One recent lesson from assisting on a photo shoot for January? Don’t take your eyes off anything in a toaster—golden waffles can become singed black in less than ten seconds.
Sometimes what I absorb is not a lesson but just a reminder of best kitchen practices from our test kitchen pros. Two seemingly obvious but indispensable tidbits: Keep your refrigerator organized and always set a timer. Simple, yes, but it’s that kind of pieces of advice that are making me a better cook.
I’m looking forward to sharing more insights with you here, as well as highlights of some of the great products (like peanut butter toffee chocolate squares from Jer’s Chocolates) that come through the food department.
What are your basic, but essential, kitchen tips?
