Entertaining Out-of-Town Visitors

Most of my friends live here in New York but jobs, graduate school, and familial obligations have scattered a few of my closest friends throughout the East Coast.

I love to entertain visitors and it’s always great to catch up with an old friend, but I can’t help feeling some pressure when hosting out-of-towners. As with any highly-anticipated and planned event, I find myself putting immense demands upon myself. I want to drop everything else to make sure my apartment is spotless, the refrigerator is stocked, and I have a fun itinerary planned.

With such a hectic day-to-day schedule, it can be simply unrealistic to get everything done before guests arrive. And after hosting my fair share of visitors over the past year (in all three cities I’ve lived in!), I’ve found that sometimes a relaxing weekend reunion with a long-distance friend will lead to both the biggest smiles and the saddest goodbyes.

How do you prepare for out-of-town guests? Do you plan big events or do you prefer a relaxing weekend of impromptu activities?
