Halloween approaches and my e-mail box runneth over with Halloween costume ideas – everything from ways to swap costumes (did you know Annual Costume Swap Day was on October 8th?) or make your own (for a great spider costume check out this one from “Formerly Gracie”).
Among all the costume ideas are quite a few related to superheros – and who can blame anyone for wanting to don a mask and cape, and image themselves with super abilities? Would you be able to fly? Move things with your mind? Pick up trucks and other large objects? Predict the future?
If your children have ever dreamed about having super abilities, they can share their big ideas and benefit the Starlight Children’s Foundation. Right now, children can download a coloring sheet from the Nintendo web site ( http://kirby.nintendo.com/returntodreamland/superabilities/ ) to share how they would make the world a better place if they had the ability of a superhero.
Submissions, which can be sent by e-mail, fax or snail mail, could be featured as part of a virtual gallery celebrating Nintendo’s sponsorship of Starlight Fun Center mobile entertainment units. According to the web site, the units, which can be rolled right up to the side of a young patient’s bed or anywhere in a hospital setting help make the hospital experience a little bit less scary for children who may be anticipating surgery, enduring long outpatient treatments, waiting in the emergency room, or fighting loneliness after visiting hours have ended.
And let’s face it, we may not have the power to move things with our minds (believe me, I’ve tried), but helping kids through the Starlight Children’s Foundation is something we can all do.
