Black and Blue

This post is dedicated to a reader who recently wrote in about having a closet full of black—with a little bit of navy blue here and there. She was wondering how to mix the two.

First, everyone should forget the “rules” when it comes to wearing black. The two biggest misconceptions in fashion is that black doesn’t go with brown, and that it doesn’t go with navy. Black, brown, and navy are all neutrals, and there is no reason why they can’t be worn together! The truth is, you can even look chic in black and navy. Here’s how.

1) Don’t be shy about it; instead, be deliberate. Make your intentions clear to others by wearing one main piece in navy, and likewise in black. For example, try a navy top with black pants and pumps – you’ll find it to be very Parisian and very stylish.

Another option? A black blazer over a navy dress, like you see below on Kate Hudson:

2) Navy and black look great on their own, but don’t be afraid to incorporate other colors into your outfit, either. This will make you look like a pro! Neutrals, like gray and white fitted tees, will pull together a black cardigan over navy trousers. Even brighter colors, like poppy, make pretty pairings, too. The below is a more adventuresome example, but it shows that you can successfully pull off this more colorful palette.

3) Still need convincing? It may help to take cues from clothing that has been made in navy and black. The jacket below, by Zara, has contrast stitching, which helps skeptics understand that the two colors actually do match.

Are you now more likely to take a step of confidence and try out these looks? I hope so! Let me know what you think!
