Today is National Junk Food Day, and according to Yahoo!, a lot of you are searching for things like Pringles, M&Ms, Twinkies, and Oreos—all delicious, and all totally unhealthy. But apparently, today’s the day to indulge in your favorite fatty, high-calorie, bad-for-you foods. Merriam-Webster defines “junk food” as “food that is high in calories but low in nutritional content,” which seems to apply to most processed snack foods and pretty much every dessert out there.
But since we’re celebrating National Junk Food Day, what are your favorite junk foods? I try to eat pretty healthfully on a regular basis, with occasional slip-ups (dessert is always a weakness), but here are some of my favorites:
Nachos. I’m a sucker for any kind of nachos, but what I especially love are the really trashy ones you’ll find at amusement parks or ball games—they usually come in a clear plastic tray and have round, thin chips and a separate compartment with the runny cheese sauce for dipping. Yummy.
S’mores. It doesn’t matter whether I’m inside or out—if there’s a bonfire, fireplace, fire pit, grill, or any type of open flame situation, I’m going to want to make s’mores. I like to let my marshmallow catch on fire, because I’m too impatient to wait for it to toast to a golden brown. Also, it’s more fun that way.
Sour Patch Kids and Swedish Fish. I’m not a huge candy person, but sometimes I get cravings for both of these. I love the chewiness and the sweet-tart bite of the Sour Patch Kids, and I love the weirdly firm yet pliable texture of the Fish and their unique flavor…which I don’t even know how to describe. It’s just the Swedish Fish flavor. Plus, they’re cute.
I could go on and on (banana cream pie! Tater tots!), but these are probably my top three. If you’re celebrating National Junk Food Day, what are you eating today? What’s your favorite junk food?
