The Best Weekend-Getaway Shoes

A weekend getaway does not require multiple bags of clothes and shoes. In fact, the only thing that should be weighing you down is the thought of how much fun you’re going to have. So lighten up!

The key is to pull together smart, versatile pieces—clothing, yes, but shoes, too. We picked six pairs—two pairs each for a weekend away at the beach, the country, or the city–that will get you through the weekend fashionably (and with a lot less baggage).

The Beach

You’ll need a great pair of sandals that can hit the boardwalk and the sand with style and grace.

I love these TKEES sandals because they come in a variety of different colors, they are superlight, easy to pack, and superchic for a pair of flip-flops. The patent leather collection called “glosses” are perfect since they are waterproof, and the metallic collection “highlighters” give your skin a nice glow.

After spending the day at the beach, it’s time for dinner and maybe dancing under the stars. To give yourself some height while staying comfortable, bring a pair of wedges. A great pair like these from Kork-Ease will look great with an evening tank top and capris. Plus, they can be worn during the day without looking too fancy.

The Country

You’ll want a pair of shoes that can take you from a picnic in the grass to biking down a dirt road—I suggest a pair of Bensimon sneakers.

These adorable and extremely flexible sneakers are great travel footwear for any destination, but I especially love them for the countryside. They are comfy and casual without resorting to an athletic-sneaker aesthetic. I have even worn these sneakers with a sundress.

Once the sun has set, it’s time to get a bit fancier. However, I don’t think it’s necessary to bring a pair of heels to the country—I think I beautiful pair of ballet flats will do the trick! These Sue London slippers (aka flats…but they are comfortable enough to wear as true slippers) are a perfect example of a ballet flat with enough sophistication to elevate your evening ensembles. The company also offers a classic flat with a slight wedge for an extra little boost. And when you’re not wearing the shoes they fold up into their own leather pouch. Brilliant!

The City

When you’re traveling to a city, it’s all about the “walking shoe.” Something you can walk in for hours without any sign of discomfort. That’s a tall order.

My go-to weekend shoes for running around NYC are Sperry Top-Siders. I know, I know—that might seem strange since they are traditionally a boat shoe. However, the company has come a long way from the New England shores in terms of style and function. Sperry now offers a full-blown collection of shoes for any and every location. I love the classic style of the boat shoe, its comfort, and all the city-ready designs that are available.

I’ve found that the shoes by the Brooklyn-based company Marais USA strike an amazing balance of comfort and style (and they come in several fun colors). Because, let’s face it—you always want to look your most fabulous when visiting the city (thanks, Holly Golightly and Carrie Bradshaw). This kitten-heel style will add a great pop of color to your LBD!
