Hi Simply Stated readers. My name is Emily McKenna and I am the Associate Food Editor at Real Simple, and the second person in the food department to join the ranks of the Simply Stated bloggers. My job has lots of moving parts—producing and writing our Road Test column, where we scan the market and test products, from grilling gadgets to salsa, to tell you which are the best; handling nutrition and developing recipes, including for our Start With column and Ten Ways. Right now I’m working on November recipes, and I’ll admit: It’s surprisingly easy to get into the Thanksgiving spirit—even in the summer heat.
Before coming to Real Simple, I worked at Food & Wine, food52.com, and D’Artagnan. I’ve also been a recipe tester for The Essential New York Times Cookbook and The Wall Street Journal, and I’ve worked as a private chef. My first food inspiration was my grandmother, who, with her penchant for olive oil and garlic, is still the best cook I know.
