Rather than pouring a veritable cocktail of chemicals down your drain, use a couple of kitchen (or science experiment) supplies and a pot of boiling water to get things flowing smoothly again.
Here are the step-by-step instructions:
1. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar down the clogged drain.
2. Cover the drain with a wet cloth for 5 minutes.
3. Remove the cloth and flush the drain with steaming-hot water.

I’m seriously going to need to try this, because the few times I tried the chemical solutions, they did not quite work. Thanks!
Better yet, before putting the baking soda down the drain, work 1/2 cup of table salt down the drain. Take a knife and work the salt and baking soda down, but adding the salt will really help scrape gunk off the walls of the pipes as the baking soda/vinegar mixture push it through. I even stop up the sink for a few seconds at a time to force the mixture through when it really starts “erupting.” You can leave it all night and it doesn’t hurt a think. Works great. Been doing this for years.
Is this still doable on a septic tank system? I feel like we have to be super careful with what goes down our drains. Might just be my picky husband but would hate to make a bigger mess if this is not good to try with septics.
I that you should put water down the drain before and after to clean your clogged drain. Do you agree?
FYI In our drains, this has worked well in the past when the drain is running slightly slower. However, I have tried this when the drain more clogged and the end result was a completely clogged drain. At that point, the chemical drain cleaner was the only thing that worked.
This works great, using the addition of the salt, even if the drain is completely clogged. (Trust me on this.) But I recommend that you use a wire hanger to poke around down there when the salt and soda are down there to open up a channel for the vinegar to get in and really do its thing. You also might have to poke around down there after you put the vinegar in. But once you break thru the clog, you will see INSTANT results! Let the whole thing sit for 10 – 15 minutes and then very slowly and very carefully pour in a pot of boiling hot water. Tap hot is NOT hot enough. Trust me on this too! You’ll be amazed. For good measure, I always do a second treatment on top of the first. I’ll never buy the chemical uncloggers again!
