What’s Your Plan for the Oscars?

Planning to watch the Oscars this Sunday? Personally, I love the Academy Awards because it’s the perfect excuse to indulge in copious amounts of couch sitting, candy eating, and celeb gossiping. And the gowns – I love the gowns. Even the bad ones. Remember when Gwenyth won Best Actress for Shakespeare in Love? Remember the pink taffeta Ralph Lauren gown she wore? Well I do. In fact, I was so inspired by its beauty, I found a seamstress who could re-create it for me (albeit on a much smaller budget) to wear to my Junior Prom. Not kidding. I swear it looked just like this…(and I LOVED it)…

While I’m normally all about throwing a festive party, this year my Oscar viewing will be pretty low key. We’ve got friends staying with us this weekend, so it’s the perfect excuse to have a casual dinner at home plopped in front of the TV on Sunday. We might end up with a couple extra drop-ins, but still, the menu will be simple – Pasta Limone and a green salad with vinaigrette. I figured a little popcorn-and-candy bar would be enough of a “special touch”, so I’ve stocked up on popcorn, gummy bears, twizzlers, and chocolate covered pretzels to satisfy our snacking needs. Yum.

If you want to step it up a little, why not invite a few more friends over and put together some tasty appetizers? You’ll find some great make-ahead recipes here

I’ve also always loved Ina Garten’s Academy Awards Party, which you can find in her Barefoot Contessa Parties! book. It’s a fun take on TV dinners.

Or, if you want to go the other way and be even more low-key, order up some pizza from your local delivery joint. Less time cooking means more time enjoying the pre-show so you can give fashion criticism your full attention. (I plan to rely on my DVR for this purpose).

Another fun touch would be an Ice Cream Sundae bar. You can get all the toppings laid out in advance (candies, chocolate syrup, whipped cream) and pull out the ice cream mid-show and let guests help themselves. You’ll find some creative topping suggestions here
