Use a Bamboo Steamer to Carry Pies

I've been racking my brain all week trying to figure out how to carry two pies from my apartment in Harlem to my Thanksgiving celebration in Brooklyn, which will end up being a commute of about an hour on the subway. By now I'm a pro at carrying everything in reusable bags, but pies provide a special challenge since you cannot stack them.

Thankfully, Martha Stewart and  the lovely ladies at TheKitchn shared a simple and, I think, elegant solution. Use multi-tiered bamboo steamers to carry your pies.

So I'll be headed downtown today to pick up a steamer basket from Pearl River Mart, or Amazon also sells them. See the pictures below for a couple of options. I think this would also work well to package food for gifts. For example a two tiered steamer with a quiche on one level and rolls or salad or something on another. It's the same idea as those tiered metal lunchboxes, but with food for a family.

2-Tier Wooden Steamer from Pearl River $5.50 to $17.50

Norpro Deluxe 3-Piece Bamboo Steamer Set from Amazon $17.99

Are you carrying food to your Thanksgiving dinner? Any brilliant ways of bringing your dishes?
