Do You Wear Thongs???

by Julee Wilson

This might be too personal of a question—but I’m not too shy to ask (hehehe): Do you wear thongs?

I’ve had several conversations around this question over the past few months and I wanted to know how you all feel about this intriguing piece of cloth we call a thong (or g-string, y-string, etc).

1. Some people think they are necessary (myself included) for their practical purposes of hiding your panty line and protecting “your business” while feeling like you have nothing on.

2. Others believe quite the contrary. Putting a piece of fabric where-the-sun-don’t-shine is just not something they can or want to do. The void of panty lines just isn’t that important or they feel more comfortable in a full fledged cut.

I can definitely see both side of the argument, though I will never give up my beloved thong (my favorite are Cosabella’s mesh g-strings).

What do you think? To thong or not to thong?

  1. I was all about thongs when I worked in an office, because I had to wear nice pants and I’m not into panty lines. Whenever I dress up or wear something sheer or form fitting, I definitely wear them. Since I work at home now, though, I wear more of the full-coverage variety, because I’m always in jeans. (I like Old Navy’s Hipster underwear.)

Yes! Almost exclusively. They are just more convenient and I don’t even notice them anymore…

At the age of 62, I definitively am thong! No matter what I wear on top of them, I do wear nothing else but thongs. Why? first of all, they are as comfortable as any other underwear. Secondly, I find it ugly and so much un-sexy if one can see where your underwear starts and ends – this is too private to me! Not only do I wear thongs daily, I also wear Poise-pads daily!!… got to do, what you’ve got to do at a certain age ;-)

I swore by my teeny-tiny stringy panties for years untill recently. While I was pregnant I reverted to the “grandma panties” of my childhood years. My son is now 14 months old and I have no intentions of going back to the thong side of life. I purchase only seamless ones to avoid the dreaded panty line. I’ve heard tales of g-strings increasing a woman’s odds of getting an infection and that is one of the main reasons I’ve decided to keep my bum covered.

i used to wear them everyday, then i got pregnant and started wearing the boy shorts (solely for comfort) and now two children later i only were the boy shorts. i don’t have to worry about pantie lines at by job due to our uniform we wear. and at home i am always in jeans or sweats.

After YEARS of pulling yards of fabric from the “place where the sun don’t shine” I gave them a try. (I have never found a panty yet that does not creep up yet, unless it is a Spanks or other form fitting item that goes down to my knees.
Having just a tiny bit of string or fabric is much more comfortable then all that fabric, silk, lace or otherwise.
I am also the type not to wear the high waist “granny panties” and have even spent many, many years going without before the thong became popular to the public woman. For some reason, my backside is a magnant for panties to creep up and I HATED the feeling of all that fabric stuffed up my behind, even the “No ride up panties” rode up!.
It is a personal choice. I do not like feeling suffocated by items like spanks or even panty hose. For me it can cause infections when it is unable to breath or I get to sweaty. But, this is me and my physical weakness. I would not tell another woman that just because it is good for me, it has to be good for them. I have been wearing them for 30 years now.

I have tried to love thongs, but there is just something about the vision in the mirror of my 46 yr old body in that tiny thing. Everything looks lumpier and bumpier. So, I stick with my French Cut 100% cotten Jockey underwear. Panty lines I avoid with SPanx when the clothing warrants them.

Thong, thong, thong. They make me feel a little racy and it just looks so much better. Double duty in my book.

I’m definitely pro-thong. I love hanky panky for their comfort and lack of panty lines. However, while thongs are typically an everyday occasion, I do revert back to a more full variety when wearing a skirt or dress – just in case the wind blows unexpectedly :)

I’ve worn thongs for probably 10-15 years now. I did it initially because I hate the look of panty lines and I’ve gotten to the point now where I’m uncomfortable wearing any other type of panty. I’m in my 50′s now and I can’t see changing to any other type of panty.

    October 29, 2009 at 11:13 am ·
  16. Susan

No, because I would rather see a panty line than to see pants or even dresses or skirts up in someone’s crack…which is really tacky. I have seen this all too often. There are also some rather serious health issues associated with wearing thongs. Why put yourself at risk because of a pair of panties?!

    October 29, 2009 at 11:14 am ·
  17. Viciousness

yes yes and yes! much to my mother’s chagrin – helping out one day after I broke my arm she holds one up out of the clean laundry and shrieks “you wear a thong?!” As I explained to her – once you realize it’s not the same as your granny panties riding into your crack – it’s not that big of a deal. My bra is more uncomfortable than a good thong is!
Bottom line – there is NO good excuse for VPL, unless you’re over 80.

    October 29, 2009 at 11:42 am ·
  18. I made fun of a friend for years over her thong obsession. Through all four of her pregnancies she just slid them down. Last year she made me use my VS “free cotton panty” coupon to get the low-cut thong. I’m hooked dangit!
My faves by far are DKNY micro-fiber ones from Nordstrom. I feel so pretty in them! My second favorite is a totally different price point. The cotton ones in the bins at Target! They are usually 4 or 5 for $10 and often on clearance for less than $1!
I still wear other styles but am now a thong girl.

OK, you asked – so here goes. NO, I absolutely do NOT wear thongs. You that do need to know that it may not show panty lines, however – what they do show is – THE THONG! You can see the outline of the back of the thong and your butt cheeks wiggling like Jell-O. So, if you think you are being inconspicuous by not showing panty lines, you are showing a whole lot more. On top of the fact that they feel like you are being invaded. So, no – I don’t wear them.

My mom actually bought me my first thong almost 20 years ago! I was totally opposed to it at first but got used to them pretty quickly and now thongs a little more than half the time. As another commenter pointed out, the back of your undies is going to end up there anyway, might as well reduce the amount that can creep up.
In the 20 years I’ve been wearing them I have not had one single infection or problem of that nature. I do go for cotton or viscose most often though over synthetics.
Like _any_ other piece of clothing, if your thong is uncomfortable or creating lumps and bumps, try a larger size! Hopefully there is only one other person who is going to see your panties that closely and, by the time it gets that far, I’m sure he (or she) won’t care what number or letter is on the inside of ‘em.

I have a round butt, and full-cut briefs don’t leave me with panty lines–and who cares if they are “granny panties.” Thongs are seriously unsanitary–docs will tell you about how they can spread germs from back to front. Ewww.
They are also uncomfortable to me, and they don’t seem to actually fully cover what they really ought to cover, so why bother!
Besides, I like the fashionista– I can’t remember who– who says she likes VPL–shows she’s at least *wearing* panties!

  22. Aside from the 5 pairs of regular panties that i have in my drawer from AFTER pregnancy that I had to wear with the ungodly catching of the aftermath (sorrrrryyyy…), I only have thongs. Can’t take the riding of the non-thong. Might as well have it up there in the first place instead of having to hide fishing it out in front of an audience. ha!

If your pants are tight enough to show your underwear, perhaps you ought to go up a size rather than wearing a thong. So it’s okay for everyone to see the contour of your naked butt cheek? There are seamless panties that are great for this and still cover your nether parts. To each her own, but – I find thongs uncomfortable and weird.

I love thongs. I’m wearing one now! But, I have heard of cases where you can catch an infection from them because (sorry to say) but after you do #2 (you know you all do!) if you don’t clean completely and properly, the excretion remains can rub onto the line of the thong, and while you’re walking can rub against your vagina. And that’s not a very good mix!
So that’s why I’m sort of ‘alert’ when Im wearing them. Like especially during my period, thongs are a no go!
But after that, I’m thong girl!

I used to wear them up until about age 20 (I’m 25 now). I never was a huge thong fan but I wore them when I thought it was “necessary” and also because it seemed like the norm when I was younger. I guess I stopped when I actually thought about the places that thong goes and I absolutely never found them comfortable. I should also mention I never found regular underwear comfortable either. I switched to boy shorts and tangas which work for me because they still let a little bit show without compromising comfort. Plus, stores such as Victoria’s Secret have such a wide variety now, you can really find whatever you need for whatever you plan to wear.

I have been trying for years to feel comfortable in a thong. It just hasn’t happened. I also think that for women of my age & level of fitness (not very fit), a full view of the rear when undressing is not very pleasing in the mirror.

I cant stand thongs!!!!!!!! They really hurt after awhile!!! If Iam going
to play “show and tell” sure, few minutes on & then off!!! I would rather
go with nothing for the panty line problem, even with a thong, many times you still see the lines, so go without!!!!!

I also understand both sides of the arguments. I personally do like both. I prefer thongs on a professional level (being dressy) and regular undies for every day use (Jeans or sweats).

I used to wear them when I was a teenager, but then I decided it looked sort of tacky (hello, ass!), so I switched to panties. They look sexier, in my opinion. I still wear thongs sometimes if I need to avoid a panty line.

I cannot live without my thong underwear. In fact I wear nothing else under my garments. I wasted a lot of money on under garments that were advertised to NOT show panty lines but did not on me. Then I discovered thongs at Victoria Secret. Now I can walk with confidence and be panty line free. You can find them anywhere now. If I can’t wear a thong, I wear nylons. ANYTHING is better than a panty line showing through a beautiful tight skirt or pants. Panty lines are just unattractive and should be avoided at all cost. The front may be beautiful but its the back that gets looked at the longest!!!!!!

I have worn a thong for the past 24 years and find it annoying to wear anything else. If I wear any other knickers they end up in my bum and then I am constantly hiking them out; so my knickers may as well start there because this is where they will end up!

The thought of it gives me the willies. I will take the panty line any old day. Hey, I am wearing them, so that is a good thing. I never had much of a problem with the regular panties riding up. So if you like the thong , fab, but don’t give me greif about my regular panties. ;)

I used to be against thongs: “who wants to wear a wedgie all day?” I would ask. But then I tried them, and now I love them! But you have to get a good brand, because some can be uncomfortable if they’re not well made or the right size. I still wear regular underwear occasionally, but for the most part it is thongs all the way! As for thongs showing under clothing: if your thong is showing, either your pants are waaaay too tight, or your thong is the wrong color for your outfit. I just wear flesh colored ones so they never show :)

Since I was a child I hated panty lines(no matter how ‘seamless’ a line is always there!) – so when the thong came out I was right on board and now I won’t wear anything else! However I will note, it is important to find the right kind of thong. It must be silk/satin or very soft cotton with a narrow back side. If it doesn’t have these requirements I just don’t find it comfortable – and comfort is key! (I might add that Target has about the best value – 3 for 9.99 from their Gilligan & O’Malley Collection 100% cotton – fabulous!)

I wear thongs when I want to give my guy a little thrill. As for panty lines, you CAN see a thong too. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a woman, thinking she was being sexy by wearing her thong, who only looked gross when it also showed her cottage-cheesey, cellulite dimples! Regular underwear have a tendency to smooth those out, or at least cover them up. Thongs are fine for special occasions but when I have to wear panty liners, good old cotton-crotched panties do just fine!

Tried ‘em before and don’t like the way they get stuck in the crack! At 58 I need more coverage of cellulite lumps, too! My favorite thing is the long lightweight girdles, silky ones with no seams. Spanx stick to my slacks and jeans and are uncomfortable to put on. For everday wear with jeans or sweats I like silky or satiny grannypants that arent’ too tight.

Nope! After years of fighting urinary tract infections one right after another my urologist asked what kind of underwear I wore. He promptly declared my beloved thong underwear were causing my problems…I switched to full-coverage and five years later I am still urinary tract infection free. As for the panty line issue, well I have to wear panty hose over my granny panties to keep the lines at bay.

  50. To thong or not to thong, that is indeed the question! I must admit that teeny, tiny stringy thongs are not that comfy to me, so I usually go with a thong that is a bit wider and also less prone to ride up. I also feel the need to say that a possible reason for so many thong-related problems is that a lot of girls and women don’t wear the correct size (or they pull them up above the top of their jeans – a HUGE pet peeve of mine – why would you intentionally do that?!?). I think that a girl’s panties are HER business (and her hubby’s, obviously) – bottom line, let me echo so many of you – it’s a personal choice, do what’s comfy!

Hipsters and boyshorts usually give my no problem in regards to pantlines and I think they are much more comfy.
And I thongs are not as invisible as you may think. You can see the thong outline plain as day through most casual dresses and over low-rise jeans. And any clinging garment gets shrink-wrapped to your bum. Gross

Yes, I have been converted. A friend of mine wears them all the time, swore by them and finally I said, I need to see just how much better this really is. I don’t wear them everyday, but going from NEVER wearing one to wearing them fairly regularly is a huge step for me. Granted I do agree your backside needs to be in decent shape or else it’s just nasty to see all of someone’s junk jiggling (reminds me of men who wear sweatpants with no underwear!) With some outfits they are a total must and sometimes I wear them underneath jeans or being totally dressed down because it makes you feel like you are hiding some dirty little secret :) I am 35 yrs old and have three children and FINALLY believe it or not at this age, post baby I feel I have arrived enough to pull it off.
