Favorite Things – What Are Yours?

When I relocated to Germany last month, I asked some of my favorite people to hop on my blog, decor8, for a few weeks and share a few of their favorite things. If you’d like to view these posts, please click here. I was surprised and amazed by their picks – surprised because I guess I didn’t expect some of the favorites they’d highlighted and amazed in that each contributor attached so much sentimental value to their chosen items. When it comes right down to it, it appears as though our favorite things are always the ones that cannot be easily replaced (or replaced at all), doesn’t it? Wouldn’t this be a great idea for a magazine column by the way?

And so I’m putting the question out there for you to answer… what are some of your favorite things? What can you not live without in the home? A prize ribbon you’d won, your high school yearbooks, a gift from your child, your great grandmother’s quilt? Dig deep on this and try to list at least 5 things if you can, and be as specific as you’d like. I think it’s important to evaluate what you love and what is special to you because it makes your home life feel more cozy and rich. Often, we pass by sentimental possessions all day long and forget the stories that make them special. Try to remember if you’d like… Ready?

A birthday card from my husband – it has an orange tabby kitten on it smelling a gerber daisy. We’d just lost our orange tabby, Sammie, a big fan of smelling gerber daisies. Yes I cried when I opened it. He also gave me a painting of three cats – a black and white, an orange tabby, and a calico. All perfectly captured the personalities of (corresponding) cats we had in the past. Those are the only two things I would consider running into a burning building to retrieve (except my husband of course).

I was pregnant with my first daughter when my grandmother was passing away from cancer. It was a couple of days before my shower, but we knew she wouldn’t make it much longer, so my grandmother gave me my shower gift from her. It was a handmade crochet blanket, sweater, hat, booties and doll. Those five things I’ll treasure forever. They are my favorite things.

A mother’s day card from my son when he was 20 and taking an Organic Chemistry class. I am a real coffee freak and he found a whimsical card with a wild woman holding a cup of coffe,a pot of coffee and balancing a bag of coffee on her head. “To a mom that seems to be able to do anything…given enough coffee.” The true treasure is the drawing inside of the caffiene molecule.
28 years ago my now husband and took a wild trip to San Diego in a VW Bus we re-vamped into a camper. While at Seaport village a great shop called “The Mugger, he bought me a short stout mug with hearts and trees embossed all around. considering how often I break things it amazing I still have it. I treasure it and use it often.
My sister gave me a tiny silver pinky-ring with a heart centered between two tiny flowers. I wear it everyday.
My father by choice missed out on the 30 years of my life between 10 and 40. Soon after we were reunited he passed away, but not before he made me undertand that he did love me. What he left behind came home with me in a Corona 12pk carton. There was a silver braclet that I now wear everyday to remind me that I am loved.
