Tile Tattoos: Yes or No?

We're never truly finished decorating are we? I stood in my kitchen this morning, eyes fixed on all-white tiles around my sink as I fantasized about patterned ones and how I imagine they'd look instead. Not happening though — the reality is that I rent so that's not happening. Even if my landlord did allow it, I'd hate to invest in tile that I couldn't take with me when I move. Then I thought about all those wall decals and tile stickers out there and started to dig up some articles I'd pulled together on decor8 in the past and came upon Mibo.

They have tile tattoos in addition to their lighting and other great products and I think that the colors and patterns are very nice. Simple, inexpensive, and they give the kitchen a little something personal if you happen to rent like I do.

What do you think? Are you happy with your tiles or would you like a change? Would you use tile tattoos on wall tile in your home? Have you used them before, and if so, did you like them?

  1. I covered some yucky (to me) tiles with some rolls of white contact/shelf liner paper once. It wasn’t perfect, but it was better than the ugly tiles.
A friend painted her white kitchen tiles with acrylic paint and sealed it with something clear. Not very renter-friendly!
I thought I wouldn’t like the white tiles in my new kitchen, but I do. Our walls are blue, so I suppose that’s why! I had thought about leaning a bunch of trays against the backsplash area, or even finding a sheet of plexiglass and putting cute art/paper behind it. But for now I’m happy with the white.
I think tile tattoos are a great idea – you could probably do a little DIY version if you had some solid colored contact paper to cut up =)

I love the idea! I really dislike the tile backsplash I chose when we were building the house, and I have been looking for ways to make it more beautiful and interesting. Looks like I have some fun homework to do!

  3. would totally use them – my good friend had hideous tiles – (actually they were mostly ok with random awful-precious moments like tile interspersed – she covered the offending ones with stainless steel looking stick-ons for a great cleaned up modern effect.

  4. I think the tile tattoos are freaking sweet! Replacing tile, whether in a place you own or rent, is a pain in the butt – both cost- and effort-wise. Just like the rise in popularity of wall decals, I think the “tile tattoos” are a great idea!

I have some patterned tiles in our shower that I hate, so I’m definitely going to check these out. It seems like it’ll be a lot easier, cheaper and faster to use these than to pull out the ugly tiles and retile.

  6. Depending on how seamless these “tattoos” go on, and how indestructible they are, I would definitely consider them. The styles and patterns seem fresher than what you’d typically find in traditional tiles. And they are just plain fun and funky.

  7. I love those! I think its great to have both wall decals and the tile tattoos because it allows you to do things and have the option of changing them again. You’re not stuck with one design which is fabulous for those of us who love change.
    Thanks for sharing!

  8. These are fabulous! I love tile and hope to someday re-tile my bathroom, but in the meantime, tile tattoos would be a great idea! I’m already using a few souvenir tiles adhered over the plain white ones and I like that look…scattered points of interest in a sea of white.
Oh, that gives me an idea for a blog post. I’ve been bad about sticking to the subject of my blog: my bungalow! :)

  9. Wow, thanks so much everyone for your insightful input. I love RS readers – you all really love to interact and put your opinions out there and I genuinely appreciate it as blogs can get so boring sometimes if everyone agrees or simply “walks on by” without saying something. It’s so vital to hear from you because we all learn from one another. Thanks again for your ideas and such. xo

But how easily do they come off if you need to do a change? Is there any US based companies that you could recommend? The company’s site looks great but the company is a UK based company and quite frankly with exchange rates and shipping, thoughts about how it will play with customs I don’t see much use for the company. It is a good idea just impractical from my standpoint and I cannot imagine making the cut out with my own contact paper.

Those are so cool! There are so many great “peel and stick” type solutions out there. Our family is addicted to the stick(r) frames from butchandharold.com. Check those out! Great blog…

  15. I love what you selected, but my folks did these types of times in both bathrooms when I was a kid and 15 years later = DATED.

  19. It is important to provide stability to our family, and one of the best ways is to have a stable home, where our children can enjoy the homey warmth and love from their parents

  21. I love the tiles’ designs and the patters. The tiles on the top left photo is fantastic and would love to have it in my kitchen as well. Thanks for posting these and gave me some ideas with my kitchen too.

I would absolutely use tile tatoos. Now that I know there is such a thing, I am leaving this site and going shopping for tile tatoos!! Yay!
