The Help: Introduction

Hello, book lovers:

It’s Nykia Spradley here. While I’m not a newbie to Simply Stated, RealSimple.com’s blogs, I’m delving into new territory by hosting this month’s book club.

I’ve been working at Real Simple for just about three years, and I write regularly for the home and organizing channel here on RealSimple.com. I also write for the money and fashion sections of the magazine.

I must admit, I’m not a huge reader. I just can’t seem to find the time to get through books that don’t grab me from the first page. But I’m very excited to make time for this month’s selection, The Help, a story about the relationship between several young white women and their black hired help in the 1960s segregated South. It has been on my must-read list for a few weeks, and I hear it’s a real page-turner.

I’m looking forward to delving into some interesting topics with you all about perception, race, and friendship. I’m hoping that the book will stir some lively conversations among us. So if you haven’t picked up the book yet, get a copy, and I’ll see you next week in Chapter 1!

—Nykia
