Just in time for Mother's Day…one of my favorite jewelry companies Slane & Slane has launched a lovely pearl line to compliment their already successful and amazing sterling silver and 18K gold collections.
Sisters Heath and Landon Slane are the founders and designers behind the collection that is rooted in classic architecture, mythology, a love of animals and spiritual influences. I have been lucky enough to meet the duo and they are just as wonderful as the jewelry they create. I have a pair of thier goregous pearl earrings that I wear with everything from a little black dress to my favorite jeans and a t-shirt!
Here is a fun Q&A with the ladies who dish about their company…what it's like working as sisters…what every woman should have in their jewelry box…their must-have beauty products…and MORE!
How long have you been designing jewelry? And, how did you get started?
We started designing jewelry 14 years ago when we couldn't find what we were looking for in the way of beautifully crafted sterling silver jewelry. What we wanted to wear was sterling silver jewelry designs that echoed the same respect and nobility given to heirloom flatware sets and tea services. Neither one of us are trained designers, but we knew what we were looking for and imagined we could find a way to bring our vision to life.
What's it like working as a sister team?
We have a similar aesthetic and sensibility about our design process. We frequently finish each other's thoughts about a new concept or how to tweak a design already in development. I (Heath) live on the West Coast and Landon lives in New York and this bi-coastal business relationship has fueled us creatively and enabled us to bring different ideas to the table. Technology makes the exchange of concepts and ideas easy and when we get together around the table in our showroom, it's incredibly fun to see the final shapes and materials coming together in pieces and collections. When we started the business, however, we did establish a pact that if we ever reached a place where we resolutely didn't agree — sisterhood would prevail. So far, that point has never been reached or tested.
Who or what inspires you?
The women in our family were/are icons of style to us and probably the reason we love jewelry for accessorizing. Architecture, nature and spiritual symbols are among our most visited subjects for inspiration. Sometimes a piece or a collection will combine all three sources. Details are important, not just in the design, but in how a piece is finished as well. The back of many of our pieces is as carefully designed and considered as the front.
What are the essential jewelry pieces every woman should have?
Layers of pearls, a wrist full of bangles, and a great pair of earrings.
Are you working on anything new we should know about?
We always have new things marinating. There is an interesting moment right now around pearls, in part due to Mrs. Obama's preference for these incredibly versatile and neutral gems, but also because of their timeless appropriateness. We're playing a lot with new sizes pf pearls, mixing various sizes together and layering pearl strands with silver chain in both our necklaces and our bracelets.
Have any style tips and tricks you can share?
Mix in a new pearl length (36" for example) or a different size or shape pearl (oval instead of round) to give an updated look to pearls you already own. Then add a pendant to the pearls to further update the look.
What are your personal favorite pieces in the S&S collection?
Both Heath and I are wearing pieces from the Open Feather Collection and the Basket Weave Collection. Two new collections we particularly like right now for their scale and texture. One is very light, the other is very substantial but they work together in a very appealing way.
Why a pearl collection?
Pearls are very versatile and alluring. They are ageless, feminine, sexy and romantic. And, they are very affordable thanks to the cultured freshwater pearls readily available today. No longer the exclusive domain of the nobles or aristocracy, pearls are accessible gems for women who want the neutral palette, the flexible styling capability and for many, the great symbolism associated with pearls: Love, luck and protection — if you believe that, you'll never take your pearls off!
What separates S&S from the rest?
We try to create new classics with timeless materials that women can mix with what they already own. We want our jewelry to be a palette which each of our customers use to create their own look. That, for us, is the ultimate pleasure and realization of our vision.
