Mint Julep Recipes: Cocktails & Cupcakes

With the Kentucky Derby happening tomorrow, it's all about the Mint Juleps this weekend!  This traditional – and wildly popular – Derby drink is surprisingly easy to make. One of the most important elements is the crushed ice. No cubes in this cocktail! Use a metal mallet and sturdy bag to crush your own ice if necessary.

Mint Julep

4-6 fresh leaves
2 1/2 oz bourbon whiskey
1 tsp *superfine sugar or powdered sugar
2 tsp water
crushed ice

Muddle mint leaves, sugar, and water in a collins glass. Fill the glass all the way to the top with crushed ice, then add bourbon. Garnish with a mint sprig and serve with a straw.

*If you don't have superfine sugar on hand, you can make your own by running granulated sugar in a food processor or blender for about a minute.

Want to put a unique spin on this drink? Serve up some Mint Julep Cupcakes for dessert! This concept is a lot heavier on the "sweet" and light on the "strong", but it has a great minty kick!
